List of fatal dog attacks in the United States

Did you know that a dog attack happens every 75 seconds in the United States? Did you also know that over 800,000 people receive medical attention from fatal dog attacks and 10 to 20 people die from their injuries?

Dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds have committed these fatal dog attacks. From family dogs to neighbor dogs, these attacks have happened in homes and in public. Dogs have attacked their owners, their owners’ friends and children, other people’s pets, and even complete strangers.

In addition, dogs are known to be the main source of rabies transmission to people. They also spread zoonotic infections, which can cause illness or death. Studies have shown that 3 to 8% of dog bite injuries get infected with meningitis, septic shock, and endocarditis which could lead to death.

This is quite a serious issue, so we have decided to do our best to make you aware of the fatal dog attacks that have happened in the past.

Fatal dog attacks in the US

Fatalities in the year 2020.

  • A 4-month-old baby McKenzie Terwell was attacked by her family dog and died as a result of the blood she lost from the injuries she sustained from the dog bite. This fatal dog attack took place on the 9th day of January in Dayton, Ohio.
  • On the 10th of February in Oro Grande, Califonia Sterling Vermeer was killed by a pit bull ‘Thor”The family dog, in the family home. The 5-year-old was dead by the time the police arrived. A family member called 911, stating that the pit bull attacked the child and would not let go.
  • 70-year-old Fredrick Shew was killed by his dog on the 11th of April in Portland Oregon at night while sleeping. The dog bit his neck but by the time his neighbor could come to his rescue, he was already dead.
  • On March 28, in Fort Worth Texas, a dog living in the home bites an elderly woman who was confined to a wheelchair and bit her arm, shoulder, and neck. Her death was classified as “mauling by a dog” two weeks later.

Fatalities in the year 2021

  • A 3-year-old boy was mauled by his family’s dog on April 27, in Belfort South Dakota, while playing in the yard. The family dog broke free from its enclosure and the boy was attacked by the dog who bit him numerous times.
  • A dog bit a 5-year-old girl on May 13 in Pound Ridge, New York. The 5-year-old was bleeding and the family dog stood by while they waited for an ambulance to arrive.
  • A 4-year-old girl was attacked by a dog on July 29 in Atlanta Georgia, during her sleep. The dog was playing with the family’s Chihuahua and bit her arm. The girl’s mother woke up and started to rescue her from the dog. In the process, she was bitten on the hand, arm, and neck. The girl later died as a result of her injuries.
  • Dogs dug under the fence from a neighboring yard on the 16th of march in Carteret Newjersey and attacked Ahmed and his mother while they were in their own fenced-in backyard. The boy was taken to a local hospital by helicopter and later passed away from his wounds there, while his mother was taken to the hospital with severe injuries.

Fatalities in the year 2022

  • 1-year-old Lola Jayde Farr suffered neck, head, and facial injuries when a dog at the home of her relatives attacked her on the 1st of February. She was sent to the hospital where she died on the 6th of February.
  • Drue Parker a 4-year-old boy was mauled by his aunt’s four dogs on the 23rd of February in Baytown Texas and died at the hospital.
  • A group of 5 dogs escaped from the home in Selma Califonia and mauled to death a 59-year-old man named Hutch Barry while he was taking a walk on the 31st day of July.
  • On the 21st of august, Pamela Jane a postal worker was killed by a dog in Putnam Florida when her car broke down. People rushed to her aid after hearing her scream but she died the next day as a result of the fatal attack.

Conclusion

There are a lot more fatalities than these listed ones. Fatal dog attacks in the US have occurred with different breeds and types of dogs. The deaths from dog attacks happened with both children and adults.
